Project 11 : Mounting an Exhibition ( Scale )

Exhibition time.....!

Preparing the presentation board for the exhibition.
A1 Board full of pictures.

The A1 board, I paste on it many photos of my projects and the process of making it.
I did the border of the board with hundreds of pieces of papers with 4 main colours, pink, hot pink, baby blue and maroon.

The Portfolio

I made this portfolio with about eight pockets to put all my A3 size projects inside.
I want my portfolio to be nicely kept and neat.

Project 10 : Community Facility (View)

In a group, students are required to carry out a case studies of a "Community Facilities" theme in a relation to free building structure either located inside or outside buildings which functions as exhibition room, sitting room, sales area, toilet and etc.
This case study should be based on the academic visit to Malacca.

So, during the academic visit to Malacca, i captured as many as i can photos of the buildings, the environment of the buildings and also significant decorations.

Project 9 : Integrated Project (Angle)

In group, we are required to design a pavilion which will function as USM information centre.

Our Pavilion is named as I-Conusm.

Design Concept:

The design concept of this pavilion is based on a rock or stone. As we visit to historical place, the information of the place or the items is written on a information stone.

Same situation during the Stone Age, every information is written on a rock or a stone or wall of a cave.

Thus, our group agreed to make the design based on the rock.

The pavilion has 4 basic spaces, that are :

exhibition space, sitting area, sales area and toilets.

Building materials:

The wall of the pavilion will be made of Insulated Concrete forms and panel glass.

These performed blocks are made with expanded polystyrene (EPS) and metal rebar which can be stacked to build the frame of the wall replacing the standard wall framing. They are then filled with concrete to make it remain in position and create insulated and exceptionally strong wall. The concrete which will be used is fly ash concrete.

The features of the insulated concrete forms.

1. Easy to use- it is very easy to be used as it takes much less crew and take significantly less time to build compared to the traditional construction method.

2. Energy Efficient – the insulation properties of the polystyrene and the high thermal mass of the concrete help o reduce the internal temperature fluctuations to create a more efficient and comfortable indoor environment as the insulated concrete walls can provide thermal performance values of an R-50 or better.

3. Noise reduction- T he I.C.F. walls have a sound rating between 40 - 50 S.T.C. (sound transmission class). Thus, it makes an enormous difference in the reduction of noise transmission.

4. Fire resistance- The ICF is highly rated for fire resistance and and has been proven in some other product s to have 3 to 4 hours resistance rating.

5. Strength – The wall made up of ICF is exceptionally strong. It also functions as natural disaster resistance. Concrete buildings survive high-force winds like hurricanes and when it is properly reinforced, they should also withstand earthquake.

6. Mildew/ rot – These walls will not support the growth of mildew and mold.

7. Design diversification – it allows more freedom and design due to structural qualities.

8. Sustainable - It’s improved energy operation. – the superior insulation, air tightness, and mass of the walls can reduce the cost of operating heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) in the building by up to 40%.

Insulated Concrete forms.

High concentration of fly ash concrete

Concrete is needed to be filled into the blocks of insulated concrete forms. For an eco-environment building, the concrete is replaced by another alternative green building material which is fly ash concrete.

Features of fly ash concrete:

1. Environmental advantages

2. costs less than Portland cement

3. saves energy – by replacing energy-consumptive Portland cement, thereby reducing carbon dioxide emissions

4. increased late strength,

5. better workability,

6. Reduced permeability - By reducing permeability, it increases durability.

7. lower shrinkage,

8. reduced creep,

9. less heat of hydration,

10. reduced bleeding,

11. Better concrete pump ability.

For flooring we will used Bamboo flooring : strand woven bamboo flooring
Features of the bamboo flooring:
1. can be manipulated to a suit a variety of styles
2. Bamboo is stronger and denser than hardwoods
3. much better able to withstand moisture due to its tropical characteristics
Green characteristic :
1. highly renewable source of material- wood takes approximately 15-20 years to reach maturity, whereas the non-harmful harvesting of bamboo takes a mere 3 to 5 years.
2. can be harvested without the need to replant - because the root system is left intact when it is harvested. The rhizome root structure has the ability to hold the soil in place preventing erosion and also can grow below the surface and help a plant reproduce vegetatively.

The site of the pavilion is on the USM Convocation's site.

Thats all, thanks.

project 8

Project 8 : Object Connection (Jointing)

This time, it was a really fun project as we were asked to make a giant jigsaw puzzle.
Each one of use represent one piece of small jigsaw puzzle which size about 210mm x 210mm.
On the jigsaw puzzle, we were asked to write our full name and doodles out the progress and the experience together with what we learn in making project 1 to 8.

So, the first thing i did was, doodle out the doodles i want to be on my puzzle on a piece of paper.
Then, I arranged them in the coordination that i want them to be in.
Then only i doodle them out on the puzzle.

after the doodles are done, come the time to put the colour in.
This time, due to limited time left before the submission, I decided to use art marker.
And this is the result.
Alhamdulillah, i manage to done it at 6 a.m.

In my puzzle, i put almost all the things that i learn in HBP since i was here doing project 1 to 8.
I also doodle out all the project i have done.
As for me, from all the single project we have done, there are things that we learned while doing it.

From all the project and the sketching activities,
i had learn that we need to "JUST DO IT".

Although i did not confident with what i want to do will turn out to be the best and success, i need to put the confidence and courage in my self first. Then, the other things will come.
Just do it. if we not doing it, we will never know whether we can make it or not.

My project never turn out to be the best among the students, and I had also be in "the worst group". It hurts to hear that sorts of comment, of course, at first. But later when i think and think, again and again, it giving me courage actually to have a better work, to give better commitment and to have the best in the future.

Ready to submit:

Everyone were so excited to put their puzzle in the giant jigsaw puzzle.

thanks for reading :)
Assalamualaikum.

In this group assignment, we were asked to choose 3 buildings in the Georgetown World Heritage site and do site analysis.

So, in this group, with Colonial Buildings theme, we had choose :

Suffolk House
Standard Charted Bank
Eastern and Oriental Hotel

The first things to do of course the site visit.
During the site visit, many pictures were captured and other information that we can gained from the site.
Next, we collect more information on these 3 buildings from the internet, especially about the history, background and etc.

I was likely involve mostly in the Suffolk House.
So here i will explain about the Suffolk House.

The Suffolk House

Suffolk House also known as the Great House once upon a time.
It was the resident of Francis Light.

History :
(source: Wikipedia)

In Penang, Malaysia, the Suffolk House refers to two early residences built on the same site located some four miles west of George Town, Penang, on the banks of the Air Itam River(Black Water River). The earliest of the two buildings is notable for serving as the residence of Francis Light, the founder of the British settlement on the Prince of Wales Island, commonly known as Penang Island. Following Light's death in 1794, and with Penang becoming the fourth presidency of India in 1805, a newer Suffolk House replaced the original house, assuming multiple roles and was later neglected before its current restoration.

The mansion and the estate it was built on, the Suffolk Estate, is presumably named after Suffolkcounty in England. Light was born in Dallinghoo, Suffolk in East Anglia.

Architecture Style

The Original House was a simply a humble timber and attap garden house, fashioned in a simple anglo-Indian Garden House style formerly common in British India. The current Suffolk House is a detached double-storey building of Euro-India Georgian Styling. It sits upon land once owned by Light as his pepper estate whereupon Light built a humble timber and attap garden house, as noted in letters from visiting friends. The current colonnaded Euro-Indian Georgian Building was thought to have been built by W.E. Philips following his purchase of the land from Light's former partner, Scott.

Restoration/ Renovation :

this building had undergo a few phase of restoration.

In 1993, Penang Heritage Trust has conducted a dilapidation survey of the Suffolk House . Then, in 2000, the State Government allocated RM500,000 to kickstart the physical conservation works and appointed Arkitek LLA Sdn. Bhd. to manage the project. The conservation architect, Ar.Laurence Loh remain faithful to its original design, Laurence relied on the painting of Suffolk House done between 1811 and 1818. Even the electrical lamps which ordered from India, are similiar in design to the period oil lamp seen in the old photographic. The restoration was complete in June 2007 with the collaboration of the state, HSBC Bank, The Penang Heritage Trust and members of the public with the total cost about RM 5 million.

Function:

The Suffolk House currently function as museum and restaurant.

P1090069 copy P1090079 copy

It is open to self guided tourist to visit this heritage building from 10 am to 6pm everyday. It's also now a western dining restaurant, known as Suffolk House Restaurant.

The significant ornaments that captured our attention.

1. the Indian oil lamps which is specially import from India.

2. The big pillars that always stand in two signifies the anglo-indian garden house style.

3. The english design of the doors.
